Parents, please help your student be prepared and safe during physical education by providing athletic shoes that can be securely fastened. Keeping a pair at school is best. If this is not possible, please have them bring or wear a pair to school on PE days. This will allow them to fully participate in all activities safely.
* No Crocs, dress shoes, flip flops, sandals, winter boots, hiking boots or slip on shoes of any type.
PE teachers use a variety of ways to gain a class's attention. I use music. The students are taught to start and stop with the music. When the music is on, it is the students' time. They start their activity, can get drinks, go to the bathroom, talk to their friends, etc... When the music is off, it is my time to talk and students stop and listen for directions.
At times students will come up to me "tattling" on another student. In an effort to help teach students the valuable social skills needed to work through minor conflicts, I have developed the problem Conflict corner. If a student has an issue with another student they must ask (take) the "offending" student to the problem solving area in the corner of the gym. There they will find a poster that will help guide the two students through the issue and come up with a solution. Once students agree to the solution they can leave the Conflict corner and return to the activity. If a student refuses to go to the Conflict corner when asked, that student has an immediate 5-minute time out The same holds true if a student leaves the problem solving corner before agreeing to a solution. If students cannot work out an issue, they may ask me for help. I will not settle the dispute for them, but rather offer suggestions that the two parties may want to consider.
Respect: Teachers, Others, & Equipment
Students are expected to follow the one rule of the gym, RESPECT. This can be demonstrated in three main areas:
1. Respect the Teacher
Students can get drinks anytime the music is on or at the end of class. This way they have a choice to either stop playing or waiting until the end. I don't allow drinks during my time when the music is off. Students need to be in the gym listening to me at that time or they'll miss out on important instructions.
